Slavery takes place all over the world. 58% of the 27- 46 million people are slaves in India, China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh. Currently, India is the most effected place in the world, it has 18 million slaves. They are forced into domestic work, farming, construction, forced begging, labour, fishing and the sex industry. Below is a picture of the population of modern day slavery.
Nepal is ranked 13th out of 167 countries in slavery. 259,000 people in Nepal are living in modern day slavery. In Nepal, it shows modern slavery in three main forms. The men are forced to suffer in dangerous living and working conditions doing construction work. Nepalese women on the other hand, are forced into many forms of prostitution. Approximately 7,000 Nepalese woman and girls are being trafficked to India every year. The third category of slavery in Nepal is embroidered textiles.
In Nepal, there are a number of organizations that are trying to help abolish slavery. These are the organizations:
Community Empowerment and Safe Migration Education:
This organization work in rural communities to try and bring trafficked children home and find ways of ending trafficking in their villages. The Free the Slaves organization, builds and reinforces grassroots movement in the most affected places.

In Nepal, the industry has been strengthening and uniting women and girls in places such as restaurants and dance bars so that they can prevent and escape sex slavery. There has been self-help groups set up for women and girls to help them find jobs that are safe, where they will be treated with respect and get paid properly.

This organization helps the Nepalese government improve its law and actions against slavery. Our advocacy efforts are aimed at improving the countries action plan against trafficking and making sure that slavery is better defined in the constitution.
